Choose a location for preparing you dinosaur kale garden bed that has moist, well-drained soil and full sun throughout the day. Till the soil 6 to 12 inches deep with a garden tiller in early spring. Spread a 1- to 3-inch thick layer of organic compost over the soil and till the garden bed a second time to fully mix the soil and compost.
Plant dinosaur kale seeds three to four weeks before the last frost date in the prepared garden bed. Push kale seeds 1/2-inch deep in the soil and space seeds 4 inches apart in rows that are about 8 to 12 inches apart. Plant four to six seeds in each planting space to ensure a plant develops in each place. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and gently press the soil to ensure contact between the seeds and soil.
Spray water over the garden bed to moisten the soil and encourage germination; mist finely so you don't disturb the planted seeds. Water dinosaur kale plants with about 1 inch of water per plant per week.
Thin the kale plants to leave only the healthiest plant when they are 3 to 4 inches tall. Alternatively, you can sow dinosaur kale seeds heavily in raised garden beds, then thin the plants when they reach 6 to 10 inches tall, leaving 8 inches of space between plants.
Fertilize kale plants once about 30 days into the growing season with organic compost or a complete fertilizer, such as 10-10-10 fertilizer. Spread the fertilizer around the plant in a circle with a shovel then rake or hand cultivate the fertilizer into the soil -- this method is known as side-dressing.
Pull weeds from the garden bed frequently by hand; weeds left to grow steal the nutrients meant for the kale crop.
